Famous singer Mariah Carey called out Meghan Markle for being a diva and it got heated. After Mariah Carey accused Meghan Markle of “diva moments,” the Duchess of Sussex and her “Archetypes” podcast listeners — “started to sweat.” The 53-year-old Carey interrupted when the 41-year-old Markle told her guest that she does not personally “connect to” the “diva … persona.” “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan. Don’t act like [you don’t],” said the singer.
“What kind of diva moments did I give you?” Asked the “Suits” alum and appeared flustered. Saying she “didn’t mean” anything by the comment and was “playing” with the former actress, Carey then clarified that she meant Markle’s “visual[s]” and not her personality.
After the interview ended, Markle expressed her relief, per Page Six. She explained: “She must have felt my nervous laughter, and … she jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear that when she said diva, she was talking about the way I dress, the posture, the clothing.”
The duchess then continued, saying: She meant diva as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig. That moment, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as inspirational.” Markle admittedly was “squirming in [her] chair in [a] quiet revolt” against the accusation, before Carey set the record straight.
“[The conversation] was all going swimmingly, really well, until that moment happened. It stopped me in my tracks. … My mind was just genuinely spinning on what nonsense she might have read or clicked on to make her say that,” she recalled.
“I just kept thinking in that moment: Is my girl crush coming to a quick demise? Does she actually not see me?” Markle explained. The “Bench” author told Carey, earlier in the episode, how important the Grammy winner’s career was to her while growing up biracial.
“You were so formative for me,” gushed Markle. She also added: “Representation matters so much. When you came onto the scene, [I was like], ‘Oh, my gosh, someone looks like me.’”
Markle launched her podcast earlier this month with guest Serena Williams, where she talked about how her fairy-tale romance wasn’t all fun and games. She noticed a double standard as soon as she began dating Prince Harry in 2016. “I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ‘ambitious’ until I started dating my now-husband,” Markle told listeners. “Apparently ambition is a terrible, terrible thing, for a woman. That is, according to some. Since I’ve felt the negativity behind it, it’s [been] really hard to un-feel it,” she said. The “Deal or No Deal” alum noted that she “can’t unsee it, either, in the millions of girls and women who make themselves smaller, so much smaller, on a regular basis.”
